Our Shipping Experience
Tamlin’s over 40 years’ experience in export and remote shipping of our pre-fabricated house packages has allowed us to perfect our methods of checking, packaging and shipping. From Ocean freight, barge, rail, road and even a helicopter, Tamlin has experience in all methods of shipping.
Our Shipping Process
Our process starts with a sophisticated custom bill of materials program that lists every item in a shipment. This goes through two checks against the final plans to make sure nothing is missed. This bill of materials program is linked to a loading report which goes to our head shipper. Like the bill of materials, the loading report lists all the items in the package with space for our shipper to indicate which truck (if there is more than one) the item is on and which lift (package) it is in.
All lifts are wrapped and labelled with the lift number, weight, and a summary of the items enclosed. For shipments of multiple trucks at the same time, the lifts to use first will also be marked with a red spray paint (usually an X or O). Once all the lifts are done and the trucks are booked, our shipper will draw all the lifts on a load plan based on the size and type of trailer that is being used to transport the materials. This allows for quick loading at our facility and also makes sure that our loads are properly situated so the trucks are not overweight on any of their axles. Our head shipper has received many compliments over the years from trucking companies about how well our loads are planned, the expertise in loading, and the fact that our loads are never overweight.
Throughout Canada and the United States our preferred method of shipping is a flat deck trailer (usually 53 or 48 feet long). Although we can ship intermodal (road/rail combination), we have found that even though it is less expensive on a per trailer basis, we will usually have to use have an extra trailer as we can’t get as much into a closed van type trailer (rail won’t take flat decks) as we can on a flat deck. This coupled with the fact that there is more time allowed to unload a flat deck versus a rail van usually makes it better to ship over the road. Tamlin always works to ensure we provide our customers with the most cost-effective option for shipping.
