INTERESTED IN THIS BUILD?

Located on Vancouver Island, this Qualicum project is a refined example of traditional timber frame design adapted for West Coast living. The home is defined by a low-profile roofline and a carefully considered layout that balances open living spaces with vertical volume, creating a sense of scale while maintaining comfort and long-term livability.

At the heart of the home is the great room, where the full timber structure is expressed. A wood ceiling rises to 20 feet, supported by an exposed Douglas Fir rafter system that introduces both structural clarity and architectural presence. The rhythm of the rafters draws the eye upward, while the natural warmth of the wood softens the scale of the space, creating an environment that feels both expansive and grounded.

Natural light plays a defining role throughout the interior. A series of skylights runs along the roof peak, bringing daylight deep into the living space and reinforcing the verticality of the structure. This continuous line of light accentuates the timber framing while shifting throughout the day, adding movement and variation to the interior experience.

An open loft, designed as a home office, overlooks the great room and strengthens the visual connection between levels, allowing the volume of the space to be fully appreciated. Adjacent to the main living area, a dedicated sunroom extends this relationship with light, where skylights form the ceiling itself and create a bright, immersive space that changes with the seasons.

A stone fireplace anchors the great room, grounding the vertical openness of the space and reinforcing the balance between scale and warmth. Expansive glazing further connects the interior to its surroundings, bringing in filtered coastal light while maintaining a sense of privacy.

The Efficiency of Prefabrication
This project highlights the advantages of prefabrication in a coastal environment. Structural components were manufactured in a controlled setting and delivered ready for assembly, allowing the home to move efficiently through the structural phase and into finishing.

This approach supports a high-performance building envelope suited to the coastal climate, while improving construction efficiency and ensuring the integrity of the timber structure.
