The Urban Retreat project demonstrates how timber frame design can be adapted for a compact residential setting without sacrificing a sense of openness and architectural presence. Designed for an established neighborhood, the home uses vertical space to create a layered living environment that feels both expansive and private within a smaller footprint.
At the heart of the home is a bright, open great room, where exposed Douglas Fir beams span overhead and natural light moves through the space throughout the day. A loft overlooks this central area, creating a visual connection between levels and reinforcing the sense of volume while maintaining intimacy. This relationship between the great room and loft becomes a defining feature of the home, allowing spaces to feel connected without losing their individual function.
The layout extends both above and below the main level. Bedrooms and private spaces are positioned to provide separation from the main living area, while a full basement adds flexibility for additional living space, storage, or recreation. The integration of an attached garage supports everyday functionality, particularly in an urban context where efficient transitions between interior and exterior spaces are essential.
Carefully positioned windows bring in natural light while maintaining privacy from neighboring homes, allowing the interior to feel open and connected without compromising comfort. The use of natural wood and restrained finishes creates a calm and grounded environment, balancing warmth with a clean, modern aesthetic.
The Efficiency of Prefabrication
Building within an established neighborhood requires careful coordination to minimize disruption and maintain efficiency. For this project, Tamlin’s panelized system allowed structural components to be manufactured in a controlled environment and delivered ready for assembly, reducing on site time, noise, and material waste.
This approach supports a more streamlined construction process while maintaining the integrity of the design. In urban settings, where space is limited and timelines are critical, prefabrication provides a clear advantage in delivering a high-quality home with greater precision and control.
